As we are all increasing our awareness of our impact not he environment we are becoming more conscious shoppers and looking for alternatives to reduce our waste. One huge waste creator is menstrual pads and tampons. Pads & Tampons make up for around 200,000 tonnes of waste per year and because most of them contain plastic, they take thousands of years to breakdown. Luckily for those that like the traditional period solutions of pads and tampons there are many brands that are now creating environmentally friendly versions. One Australian company doing this is Bamboo Babe, their pads are 100% bamboo, biodegradable and compostable.

If you’re looking for a reusable solution you can now buy washable, reusable pads. These come in a range of colours and absorbency levels to suit all your needs. You just need to rinse them before putting them in the washing machine.

My personal favourite solution are period underwear. What I love about these is that they can be worn on and off your period and are super comfortable. They come in a range of styles, colours and absorbency and basically feel like you’re not on your period at all. Just like reusable pads you need to rinse them before placing them in the washing machine, and wash them on a cold cycle. There are lots of brands available Modibodi, Bonds, Thinx, Bambody.

The last solution is the Menstural Cup. This one creates the least waste and is the most cost effective but does take quite a bit of getting used to. These are folded then inserted like a tampon. Once inserted the cup opens and forms a secure seal collecting menstrual fluid. After a max of 8 hours, or more regularly you empty it, wash and reuse.
